LOS ANGELES OF THE NEW MILLENNIUM
I hosted a 00's-themed party on the night Kitson, the once infamous 'shop of the stars,' went out of business, January 16th 2016. It was a recognition and celebration of the cultural significance LA contributed to the decade's identity.
The 00's had not yet come back into fashion in nightlife, streetwear, social media, or popular culture. Guests had never heard of a 00's-themed party and were forced to dig through the back of their closets to find their most emblematic Ed Hardy trucker hats, A&F denim, and Juicy Couture tracksuits.
They were welcomed by a 00's-only track list of the decade's biggest hits, vodka red bulls (the only drink available), a mug shot wall to pose against, Kitson t-shirts & accessories, and print copies of this zine, written specifically for the occasion (& given a "That's Hot" review by PopCultureDiedIn2009.com).
The story is a series of explorations into the inner lives of the decade's hottest stars, tracking them through one singular day revolving around a party at the Playboy Mansion. As day turns to night, conceptual liberties begin to outweigh comedic hijinks, culminating in a melancholic climax shared between Anna Nicole Smith and Michael Jackson.
Print copies are no longer available, but the story exists online forever, hosted by the 00's-appropriate Tumblr.
